About the Green'Un

FOR 85 years the Green’Un, or Football Star, as it was originally called, has delighted and informed Ipswich, Suffolk and East Anglia’s football folk.

Today, moving into the fast-paced 24-hour craze that is modern media, the Green’Un keeps up with the times, with Green’Un24 offering match reports for Ipswich Town, Colchester United and non-league sides straight after games, as well as a ticker on Town and U’s games throughout.

But things weren’t always as fast as this.

Back at Carr Street, in Ipswich in the 50s and 60s, huge queues were readily formed as the Football Star rolled off the presses on a Saturday night, at the old East Anglian Daily Times offices. For many it was the first time they found out how Ipswich Town had got on. For most it was a first look at that day’s professional results.

Well loved and well respected a move onto green newsprint heralded a new name Green’Un and it wasn’t until green newsprint was considered “environmentally unfriendly”, as well as becoming expensive, did it revert back to white newsprint back in the 90s.

Today, under the banner of the Evening Star the Green’Un lives on, as an exciting sports supplement in Monday’s edition of the Star.

Online the Green’Un has few equals when it comes to grassroots coverage of football. Doing what it does best - still delighting and informing the football fans of Ipswich, Suffolk and East Anglia.
